Description
The National Prison Project seeks to guarantee that conditions in prisons, jails, juvenile detention centres, and immigration detention facilities are in accordance with the Constitution, local law, and international human rights standards. The Project has successfully battled on behalf of detained prisoners in over 25 states and is the only group in the country that litigates conditions of confinement issues. Our top goals in prisons, jails, and other sites of detention are to reduce overcrowding, improve health care, eliminate violence and mistreatment, and increase monitoring and accountability. We also seek to change policies that have resulted in the United States having the world’s highest imprisonment rate and an excessive over-representation of persons of colour in the imprisoned population.
Working with the National Prison Project team will provide the intern with significant experience. Students will get experience in effecting change via jail reform lawsuits and advocacy activities.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Contributing to the creation and dissemination of advocacy materials
- Doing factual research and writing on jailed people’s rights and legislative movement
- Get updated information about prison and jail conditions
- Documenting and tracking jailed people’s grievances and reacting with educational materials
- Supervising attorneys receive campaign and litigation support.
- Additional tasks as assigned
- Participate in special projects and other responsibilities as assigned

EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS
- completed the first year of a bachelor’s degree
- A deep interest in detained people’s rights and a dedication to civil rights
- Good organisational abilities and the capacity to work independently are required.
- Outstanding research, writing, and communication abilities
- Excellent computer abilities, particularly in web-based research, as well as knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite (i.e. Word, Excel)
INTERNSHIP OVERVIEW
- Location: Our offices are now working at reduced capacity due to COVID-19. We want to develop an internship programme with a limited number of remote or hybrid internship opportunities. Applicants for this internship who live close to the DC office may choose to work with us in-person on a hybrid (half in-person, part remote) schedule.
- Time Commitment :Summer internships need a 35-hour-per-week commitment.
- Internship Duration; Full-time internships last 10 weeks and begin on either May 30 or June 12, 2023.
- Stipend :Students who do not get course credit and are legally permitted to work are eligible for a stipend. Students who obtain outside financing are entitled for a partial stipend to bring their total funding up to the stipend amount set by the ACLU for that term, if applicable. While the stipend provided by the OIST internship program may not be a significant amount, it is intended to help cover basic expenses and provide support for interns during their stay in Okinawa.
