The National Prison Project seeks to guarantee that conditions in prisons, jails, juvenile detention centres, and immigration detention facilities are in accordance with the Constitution, local law, and international human rights standards. The Project has successfully battled on behalf of detained prisoners in over 25 states and is the only group in the country that litigates conditions of confinement issues. Our top goals in prisons, jails, and other sites of detention are to reduce overcrowding, improve health care, eliminate violence and mistreatment, and increase monitoring and accountability. We also seek to change policies that have resulted in the United States having the world’s highest imprisonment rate and an excessive over-representation of persons of colour in the imprisoned population.

Working with the National Prison Project team will provide the intern with significant experience. Students will get experience in effecting change via jail reform lawsuits and advocacy activities.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Contributing to the creation and dissemination of advocacy materials
  • Conducting factual research and writing on incarcerated people’s rights and legislative movement
  • Get updated information about prison and jail conditions
  • Documenting and tracking jailed people’s grievances and reacting with educational materials
  • Supervising attorneys receive campaign and litigation support.
  • Additional tasks as assigned
